Health Level 7 (HL7) - the Basics

Health Level 7 (HL7) is an American National Standards Institute-accredited Standards Developing Organization (SDO) functioning in healthcare environment. HL7 has been specifying standards related to several application areas since its inception. These standards cover many generic application fields, for example, patient care, patient administration, results reporting, order entry, financial and document management, among others.
Moreover, this standard addresses the various departmental information system communication requirements pertaining to clinical specialties such as diagnostic imaging and laboratory medicine.

How Does it Work?

Used for communicating data among applications that are within a medical organization as well as over a range of healthcare organizations, HL7 standards help in conveying data through messages, clinical document architecture documents, or web services. These standards have obtained international acceptance with increasing number of international affiliate organizations promoting them.
Imaging results can be transmitted in the form of structured CDA documents. Applications maybe visually integrated and synchronized using HL7 CCOW (clinical context object workgroup) standard.
