What is Meaningful use

Meaningful Use made easy and simple.

The Fundamentals of Meaningful Use

Meaningful Use is a set of specific objectives that eligible professionals and medical practices have to achieve for qualifying for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) incentive payments for electronic health records (EHRs). CMS issues particular qualifications which, if met by providers, will allow them to show that they have accomplished meaningful use.
Under the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH Act), incentive payments are extended to eligible professionals who are able to demonstrate successfully meaningful use of certified EHR technology.

Reporting Timeline for Meaningful Use

You have to fulfill the criteria over a reporting period of 90 days during the first year of meeting meaningful use. Then onward, you are required to demonstrate the criteria for a complete calendar year.

Incentives and penalties involved in meaningful use

Medicare EHR Incentive program

The Medicare EHR incentive program has been replaced with CMS on 31 December, 2016 by the quality payment program. Medicare incentive payments amount to 75% of the practice's annual Medicare Part B allowable charges (up to a fixed maximum yearly sum).
Consisting of three specific stages, the Medicare Meaningful use Program comprises its own set of criteria and requirements that must be met by eligible professionals for receiving incentive payments.
The Medicaid EHR Incentive Program
The Medicaid Meaningful Use program requires participating providers to establish first the use of EHR, then maintain its use over certain years. In the first year, you are supposed to adopt, implement, and demonstrate meaningful use of a certified EHR technology. After that, providers must meet meaningful use criteria across a number of specific objectives in the subsequent years..
